Empowering Livelihoods and Communities: The “Water for Production Project”

Here Is Life, in collaboration with Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, has embarked on an impactful eight-month project in Bidibidi refugee settlement, specifically targeting zones one and five. This ongoing intervention, initiated in 2021 by Samaritans Purse International Relief, is titled the “Water for Production Project,” with a focus on improving household food security and enhancing livelihoods for refugees and host communities.

Project Objectives and Outcomes

The project aims to achieve three key outcomes, as outlined in the log frame:

  1. Increased Food Production and Improved Livelihoods: Enhancing the food production and livelihoods of vulnerable refugees and host communities.
  2. Sustained Provision of Water for Production: Ensuring sustained provision of water for production through mini-irrigation systems established by Samaritan’s Purse.
  3. Transformed and Strengthened Communities: Facilitating the transformation and strengthening of communities and churches, fostering unity and hope.

Outputs and Activities

The project has identified specific outputs and activities to contribute to the aforementioned outcomes:

  1. Farmers Support and Agricultural Inputs: Providing farmers with agricultural inputs and equipping them with knowledge and skills in Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA).
  2. Sustained Functionality of Mini-Irrigation Schemes: Ensuring the sustained functionality of the mini-irrigation schemes established.
  3. Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ: Incorporating the sharing of the gospel into the project’s activities, fostering spiritual and holistic development.

Results and Activities

  1. Supporting Farmers with Agricultural Inputs and Skills:
    • Procurement and distribution of Longe 5 maize variety, onions, cabbages, and fruit trees (Mangoes and Avocadoes) to targeted beneficiaries.
    • Inter-cropping of maize with fruit trees to enhance agricultural diversity and sustainability.
  2. Diversified and Improved Vegetable Seeds:
    • Procurement and distribution of diversified and improved vegetable seeds and associated agrochemicals to targeted farmers, both refugees and hosts, from different vegetable farms in the settlement.

Through these initiatives, the project aims to not only address food security and livelihood challenges but also foster sustainable agricultural practices and spiritual development within the refugee settlement. The collaborative efforts of Here Is Life and Samaritans Purse International Relief are set to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the refugees and host communities, paving the way for enhanced resilience and hope for the future.
